Jaw bone. Just another item that was on my bookshelf. I moved it over onto a black sweatshirt though so it could be seen better. Cropped.

As always, if you have any constructive criticisms for me to improve my posts, feel free to leave a comment below! Unfortunately I'm not sure how to get rid of the large space between each of the pictures, maybe I'll figure it out eventually. Thanks for reading!

Fujifilm S1800 Camera

Hello all and welcome back to the blog. Today is a nice cold snowy day, so I thought it'd be a good time to talk about the camera I use. I bought my Fujifilm S1800 camera over Christmas and I really like it. It's a super-zoom, or bridge camera. It's better than a normal point and shoot but not yet to the point of a DSLR (which I hope to get one day haha).

I got my camera for ~$150 (Today, Jan 11, 2011, it's ~$164), then of course you have to buy a memory card, some batteries, a case and preferably a tripod and it somewhat adds up. I was on quite a tight budget and I needed a camera under $200, so I knew I couldn't buy a DSLR. However, I wanted something a little better than an average point and shoot. I did a ton of research, looking through many cameras online before I picked this one. It seemed to have what I need: a good zoom, a higher MP than I'm used to, shutter and aperture control, 720p HD movies , etc. Another thing is I read lots of reviews from various sites, so that I got different view points for the camera, instead a biased review from someone who works for the company or someone who just hates the brand.

As you can see, it takes fairly good pictures, which after 3 years of a crappy point and shoot with pretty bad image quality, is something I desperately wanted. I looked at various sample photos and watched test videos and it seemed good enough so I bought it.

And that's the backstory on my camera. For full specifications you can look here:

Also, in my research, a very good review site that I found (other than looking through amazon reviews) is: Photography Blog Camera Reviews.

Have a nice day!

A Rainy Day

I took my camera out for a spin on this nice, rainy day. When it's raining, that's a wonderful time to experiment with shutter speed settings. Not only is it fun, but you'll learn more about your camera and you'll learn more about photography!

ISO: 400
Shutter: 1/250
Aperture: F3.1
No Flash
Exposure: ±0

With the faster shutter speeds, I've noticed that you'll need more lighting to catch the right photo, considering there's less time for light to enter the lens.

ISO: 400
Shutter: 1/400
Aperature:F3.1
No Flash
Exposure: +1

See, faster shutter, darker picture. However this was in a pretty dark spot, so it's not so much a problem when you're more out in the open.

ISO: 400
Shutter: 1/400
Aperture: F3.1
No Flash
Exposure: +2

Here's a picture of water passing over a bridge. With moving water, the faster the shutter speed, the more detail. You just have to make sure you have enough light for the shutter speed you choose.

ISO: 400
Shutter: 1/400
Aperture: F3.1
No Flash
Exposure: +2

I thought this was a pretty neat shot, considering the angle anyway.

ISO: 64
Shutter 1/15
Aperature: F6.4
No Flash
Exposure: ±0

For a smoother water effect, consider taking it with a slower shutter speed. If used correctly, it can create quite a wonderful picture. Make sure to be careful about shaking when using a slower shutter speed.

ISO:320
Shutter: 1/320
Aperture: F4.0
No Flash
Exposure: ±0

This is a shot from above the creek, from the bridge.

ISO: 400
Shutter: 1/640
Aperture: F4.0
No Flash
Exposure: ±0

Here the shutter speed is twice that of the previous picture. As you can see the water has noticeably more detail but it's also slightly darker.

ISO: 200
Shutter: 1/125
Aperture F5.0
No Flash
Exposure: ±0

Unlike all the previous pictures, this one was not taken with the shutter priority setting. I used the preset scene "Landscape" for this picture.

I hope you enjoyed my first actual picture posting. I took all these pictures with my Fujifilm Finepix S1800 camera, which I plan to talk about in a later post. If you have any constructive criticisms for me to improve my posts, feel free to leave a comment below! Thanks for reading!
